I remind students that this is all about hand eye coordination and it looking like a mess is part of the fun. Many are nervous about it looking “ugly” or “bad” and many just don’t want to commit to the exercise. I have found that students needs LOTS of pep talks and reminders for this technique.

We switch views or who we are drawing and do about five together before I set them free to practice more independently. I like to set one minute or two minute timers to start off the process. You can only look at your subject (don’t look at your drawing until it’s finished) Focus on outer edges, or contours, of facial features and clothes (no shading) You may wish to include onions, fruit, vegetables, flower arrangements, etc.-Keep your pen down (within reason of course, stretching is allowed) 🙂

Create longer observation drawings from simple still-life arrangements.

For a blind continuous line contour, have students do the same but without looking at the paper. For a continuous line contour drawing, direct students to fix their eyes on the contours of the onion and draw the contour very slowly with a steady, continuous line without lifting the drawing tool. Try both drawing exercises with students in five to ten minute increments then adding more time if desired.

At Carnegie Institute for Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University, which Warhol graduated from with a degree in pictorial design), Warhol’s offbeat, nontraditional drawing style did not meet all his professors’ academic standards, and he was forced to do extra work in this area over summer break. As a child he took art classes at the Carnegie Museum of Art and later won awards for drawings he had made in high school. Drawing was a constant part of his artistic practice.

Although Warhol is best known for his silkscreen prints, he was also an excellent draughtsman.
